Salaries of Virginia state employees 2010

Data and analysis on salaries from 2011 are here. The data below is from 2010.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch has updated its database of state employee salaries to include additional state agencies that were not included in the initial request. Also, we have added individual dates of hire, and in some cases gender, for 212 government departments.

We used the state's Freedom of Information statute to obtain the information as part of our ongoing effort to report findings about government spending and the use of taxpayer money:

As required by FOIA law, state agencies provided salary information for 100,978 employees in October and early November. The Times-Dispatch is using this data in an ongoing series of articles and to create this searchable database. We opted to exclude the names of state employees whose total compensation is less than the statewide average of about $50,410. Colleges and universities choose what to report to DHRM regarding employees who are paid through endowments or other sources outside of state tax dollars. Some part-time employees may not be included. Years of service are rounded to the nearest year, as of 11/1/2010.
